LGP’s 2012 B.A. Intern Is…

MELISSA! (or, Missy, or Mel, or whatever… ha)

In 2011, Gregg and I had the idea to bring on an intern, mainly so we didn’t have to carry our stuff anymore, but also because we are passionate about empowering the next generation of photographers. We know that we didn’t “do it” right. We came out guns blazing four years ago and said “HEY! WE’RE PHOTOGRAPHERS, HIRE US!” and our images showed our amateurism. So nearly four years later we feel like we have a unique story to tell, of what not to do, what pitfalls to avoid, and at least a small idea of what it takes to be relatively successful in this business.

So in 2011 we put out there that we wanted to hire an intern… we had seven applicants, set up three interviews, and hired one, and to be honest we knew who we were hiring from her initial email… Aubrey, who was absolutely fantastic.

This year, in 2012, we had nearly 30 applicants, set up seven interviews, and the race was wide open. We split the interviews up over two days, and after the last interview ended we were banging our head against the wall. A serious case could have been made for all seven people, but ultimately we went with a gut feeling and one we are incredibly pleased with. Missy impressed us from the start with her application, which included such answers as “I’m a DC gal,” “part alien, part chick” in response to asking if she was a dude or chick, “Halo 2″ in response to her favorite video game, and… I’m not saying this is why she was hired, but it certainly didn’t hurt that she was the ONLY person to respond Tom Welling to the best actor to have played Superman =).

Missy is ALSO from Adrian, like Aubrey, so we’re pretty sure something good is in the water up there. She’s already got a pretty good understanding of photography and art (she’s an art major in college), is our kind of people, and has been shooting on her own for a couple years.

Gregg and I are extremely excited she is on our team for 2012. We’re looking forward to some serious hilarity and face-melting images. We want to say thank you one last time to EVERYONE who applied for this internship, you all made it very, very difficult!

So please, if you would, give Missy a warm LGP welcome. You’ll be seeing plenty of her around here for the next year =)

Kailey has been a long time friend of LGP. This will actually be the third time we’ve done a photo session with her, and we’re so happy she chose us to take her engagement photos! Gregg took Kailey and Brian out and around Toledo, then out to Maumee Bay State Park for some great sunset photos. Here are just a few of our favorites!

Rachel and Alex – Engagement Session

This was definitely one of the more fun photo sessions Gregg and I have ever gone on. We actually met Rachel and Alex down in Columbus, at the location Alex proposed… Jeni’s Ice Cream. If you didn’t know, Jeni’s makes probably the best ice cream in the COUNTRY, and Alex had obtained permission for us to do a significant portion of their engagement photos right in the shop (which came with some complimentary ice cream!). After we finished up at the ice cream shop, we headed up and down the short north district of Columbus and took some photos around whatever we thought looked cool =). All in all, a great day! Here are some of our favorites!

Stoots Wedding!

I’m not sure if I’m going to lose my man-card for this, but I can’t think of a better way to describe these two as freakin’ cute =). The whole wedding was a great time for us here at LGP. Great couple, great people, got to bounce around on the BGSU campus for some photos, what more could you ask for? Here are some of our favorite images from the day:

Senior Photos // Landon

I submit to you, dear reader, yet another classic example of getting senior photos done at some big-volume box studio is stupid. Yes, stupid. Truth be told, our prices are no higher than the “big names” in high school senior photos, yet our quality and individuality is about eleventy billion chronic butt tons higher. Yes, I went there. Today check out some photos from my rad shoot with Landon last week. He’s graduated from Perrysburg this year, and is heavily into lacrosse and The Boondock Saints (see it, if you haven’t!) These guys were a ton of fun, and produced some pretty rad images. Yet another dude who’s comfortable in front of the camera, I feel like we’ve won the lottery =).

Senior Photos // Jake

Jake was the second of our two male senior sessions last week. We at LGP are huge fans of photographing dude’s who are comfortable in front of the camera (probably because they are so few and far between) so we had a blast hanging out with Jake. These are also the very first photos (a couple of them, the rest were taken by Gregg and processed by me) you’ll see on the blog that our intern, Aubrey took! So pumped to have her on board! Weimer Family Photos

I’m pretty sure Megan (Mrs. Weimer) contacted us merely minutes after we posted our (now expired) Portrait Innovations Sucks special a while back to set up a family photo session. I’m pumped she did, because even though I didn’t get to take the photographs, these are some of my favorite family photos LGP has done to date. Gregg met with the family out at Maumee Bay State Park on a beautifully overcast day (nature’s best soft box… a cloudy day!) and captured the family in their element, having fun, and enjoying the day. 95% of these images could never be captured in a crappy, cheap, volume-based studio!

Emily

So this was kind of intimidating for us =). Emily has been involved with a number of photo shoots back when she lived in Nashville, so right away Gregg and I knew we would be far less impressive right off the bat . That said, we had a ton of fun shooting with Emily, and really love some of these images. She has some of the raddest eyes I have ever seen… people won’t believe me, but I didn’t edit them at all!
